Biography
Alexandre was born and raised in Montréal, Québec, and received an M.A in Demography from Université de Montréal in 2000. The focus of his master's research was on the retirement income of Canadian seniors. Upon graduation he was hired by Social Development Canada, a Canadian federal department responsible for state pensions, where his work delved mostly on policy issues related to seniors and older workers. He entered the Public Administration doctoral program at Syracuse University in August 2004. Alexandre states, "I chose Syracuse mostly for the opportunity to work with both Douglas Wolf and Timothy Smeeding on retirement issues, but also for the possibility to acquire knowledge from a critical mass of scholars interested in Aging issues. From this general interest in Aging issues, I can pinpoint a few core areas for my future research: processes of retirement and processes of aging, governments' efforts to encourage caregiving over institutionalization, the interaction/conflicts of pension policy with caregiving policy, the social consequences of poverty in old age, and older workers' attachment to the labour force."  Alexandre also keeps an eye open for policy work related to public finances, and social policy writ large.
