Week 3 |
General
Continue to read Koenigsberger. You
should have read up to page 93 by the end of this week.
Look at the mid-term exam questions. As the
pace of the course picks up they will help you keep focused on what's
relevant.
Please be patient with me as I learn
your names; I should have most of them down by next week. However, keep this in mind: the more you speak up in class the easier it will be for me to
know who you are.
Reading assignment for section this week: What happened to
Carloman? Einhard's Life of Charlemagne.
Check out this lecture supplement on Christianity
and Mystery Religions. This is a new feature to my web site. You'll also
find a link to them on my syllabus page.

As always tell me what difficulties you are having with
Koenigsberger's book and Pennington's lectures.
Let me know if you want me to provide you with lecture
supplements, as I have done this week with Christianity and Mystery
Religions. For example, I could create a supplement which explains the point
I made in section last week about the three basic elements that went into
making Medieval Europe, using maps, pictures, and extracts from primary
sources to make it clearer. I think this might be a useful way to help you
organize the material and to fill out your understanding of Medieval Europe.
I am also open to suggestions.
Finally, I would like you to tell me (briefly, in about a paragraph) what happened to Carloman. If you don't know who he is, you haven't done the reading. In section this week, be prepared to explain your answer in greater detail and to support your assertions with evidence.
