Week 4 |
General
Let me begin by saying that I'm very pleased with the way sections are going this semester. If you keep up the good work, this will by far be the best group of students that I've ever had. I hope you're enjoying yourselves and, more importantly, learning something.
Finish Chapter 2 in Koenigsberger, and pay especial attention to the sections on Carolingian culture and the Viking invasions. For section this week, read The Song of Roland -- yes, the entire book. However, I do not expect you to read the editor's introduction. Only read it if you want to. I'll try to post an outline or study guide for the Song of Roland later this week, but I can't promise anything right now.
Study Sheet for the Song of Roland
I hope to write two lecture supplements, one on the Carolingian
Renaissance, the other on Chansons de Geste.
As soon as I get them posted I'll let you know. You also might want to bookmark
the new syllabus page for easy reference. Finally,
here's the outline that I made for my case against
Charlemagne for murdering his brother Carloman.
Don't forget to send an email to Pennington. Your first one should have been sent by now!
Quiz
The format for the quiz will be a little bit different this week. Everyone will write two IDs.
The first ID will come from one of the following four items. (I will put three of them on the quiz and you will write on one, as usual.)
Mohammed
Alcuin of York

In addition, everyone will have write on Treaty
of Verdun (843). First, you must identify who got what territory. Second,
you must tell me the significance of the Treaty of Verdun as you would on an ID
quiz.
Email Assignment
As usual, tell me what troubles you are having with Koenigsberger and the lectures. I'd also like you to recommend a movie that you think would be appropriate for us to watch this semester and to tell me a song that represents your generation. I'll tally the results and pass them on to Pennington.
