Syracuse, NY Page 1

Home to signal maker Crouse-Hinds, Syracuse is home to lot of classic and unusual signals! This page looks at the unusual oddities. The next page focuses on the Grant Blvd - Butternut Street intersection. All pictures on this page and the next taken July 2003.

UPDATE: As of Fall 2003, the City of Syracuse has replaced all incandescent bulbs with LEDs.

Note 1: Pictures of additional signal oddities in Syracuse can be found at Central New York Signals. This page is meant to compliment that page.

Lyncourt (just north of Syracuse): Court St and Syracuse China Factory
This is an uncommon but practical solution to a fairly common situation. Traffic is moving on Court St. The light is for employees of Syracuse China (just out of view, it's behind the school). The red blinkers are for people at the small businesses across the street. Instead of wasting a whole light and a sensor, and stopping traffic on Court St, the Town of Salina put up two red blinkers for the small businesses. Smart! There are partial traffic signals at several "always green" intersections in the city, such as Grant Blvd/James St and Erie Blvd/Water St.

Syracuse: Court and Loma Streets
The only Crouse-Hinds Art Deco signals left in the city (notice the fins below). There are 5 - the four-signal cluster and the green one on the far left. In the foreground is the control box.

Syracuse: Court and Spring Streets
Syracuse uses and interesting mix of green and yellow signals. Here, the center signal probably replaced a yellow one (notice the mounting box above the signal). The signal is green; the paint has flaked off the metal in spots. But the single signal on the pole was originally yellow. What's funny is the next signal (Court/Park) looks to be the same age, but it's yellow. This color mixing occurs at various spots around the city.

This picture also shows why it's bad to photograph signals when facing the sun!
UPDATE: In late 2003, this signal was removed and replaced with a 4-way stop sign.

Syracuse: Salina and Wolf Streets
This view is looking south on Wolf Street. U.S. Route 11 turns to the left (East) at this point. New York State sometimes mounts the left turn arrow signal separate from the main cluster. What's more unusual here is the fact there is both a green and a yellow arrow, an even rarer occurence.

My prize find -- a four-way non-adjustable signal!!!

Mattydale: Lemoyne Ave and Boulevard Street. Lemoyne Ave was closed in 2003 for reconstruction of the bridge over the New York State Thruway (I-90).
Yes, this is a vintage Crouse-Hinds four-way non-adjustable traffic signal, from the 1950s or 1960s! It's located just outside Syracuse, in Mattydale, a suburb to the Northwest.  The Town of Salina has upgraded most other signals and installed LEDs, but somehow this light has escaped! A classic find! (And what type of name is Boulevard Street? Is it a street or a boulevard?)
